With over six years of work experience as an health insurance administrator and manager, I have come to the ample realization that many persons in Nigeria, including enrollees subscribed to health insurance policies, do not have sufficient knowledge of what health insurance is about. By this, I mean that majority of persons in Nigeria, including those who own health insurance policies, do not know much about the working of health insurance system in Nigeria and how it stands to take care of their health and well-being.
From my experience as an health insurance customer service person, a number of health insurance enrollees who do present at the hospital or health centre on a regular basis, do not even know the name of their health insurance company or Health Management Organisation (HMO) as it popularly called.
Health insurance enrollees or subscribers who present at the hospital or health facility for treatment and care, are expected to present their identity card or means of identification, for easy identification by the HMO officer; with a view to accessing express healthcare services from the healthcare service provider (hospital or health centre).
However, the reality is that a number of health insurance enrollees/subscribers who do present at the hospital do not know the name of their health insurance companies or Health Management Organisations (HMOs). This is an indication the depth of lack of knowledge of the health insurance system, on the part of the enrollees, who are beneficiaries of the system.
Also, there are some that do not know what health insurance is about and what they stand to benefit by signing up with health insurance company.
The aim here, is not to insult, make jest or mockery of persons (especially health insurance enrollees) who have little or no knowledge of what health insurance is about.
Rather, the fact that some health insurance enrollees do not know what health insurance is about or even the meaning of HMO, goes to show that there is the urgent need for health insurance stakeholders, managers and administrators to create awareness on the basis for the existence of the health insurance system in Nigeria, its practical working as opposed to the erroneous or negative views or impressions held by some out there about it, and how its stands to take care of the healthcare needs of already subscribed enrollees and the general public who may be interested in keying into it.
On a daily basis- in the course of my work- I do receive barrage of questions and inquiries from health insurance customers/enrollees on what their health insurance policies or arrangements cover, or take care of as it has to do with the healthcare services they should access under their health insurance and I do try my best to provide answers to their questions and enquiries, for that is part of what what I am paid to do.
The fact that many do not know about the working of health insurance system and benefits of being part of it, should suggest or mean that there is much work for those of us in the health insurance sector/system to do in area of awareness creation and information dissemination.
Therefore, as an health insurance consultant, manager and administrator with over six (6) years of practical work experience, it is incumbent on me to create awareness on the working and benefits of health insurance system in Nigeria. That is the reason I decided to write this book.
In the course of this book, therefore, by the special grace of God, I intend to lay bare what health insurance system is about in Nigeria and how it stands to benefit persons who have keyed into it already, by taking adequate care of their healthcare needs and by extension, their health and well-being. More so, I intend to throw sufficient light on the system for it to become clearer to persons who have not keyed into it and leave them to make their decisions out of free will, based on their personal convictions.
The book also examines the challenges and risks facing health insurance sector in Nigeria and suggests how to make it work better, with a view to improving the health, productivity and general well-being of the populace.
I begin properly by taking a short and cursory historical excursion into the history of health insurance system in the world. That is followed by detailed examination and explanation (in chapters) of the various areas and aspects of the health insurance system.
Kindly come with me as we take a look at the practical working of the health insurance system in Nigeria, as you stand to learn and benefit a lot from this voyage into the health insurance system in Nigeria.
